The Harris in Bloom project was created by HVS in 2013, in response to members of the community who felt  there was need to tidy up and visually improve the area of Tarbert and add a bit of colour. It was thought this  would be most beneficial during the summer season so that the visitors of the Island were met with a good  first impression of the community of Harris.   In the early stages of the project, community grass-cutting and tidy-up days were organised to clean up the  public areas around Tarbert, involving help from volunteer members of the community.   Funding for the project was sought from the North Harris Trust Community Development Fund, and  community donations were revieved from individuals and local organisations/businesses. Donations tubs  were also placed around the local shops and hotels.
The picture on the right is from the first tidy-up day which was held on Saturday 9th March 2013 in Tarbert.   The main areas which were cleaned up were around the bus car park, the old pier road, between Scott Road   and MacQueen Street and the area by the Harris Tweed Shop and the Masonic Lodge. The clean up was very   successful, with the rubbish filling 6 full trailer loads and 2 van loads.   The group plan to extend the Harris in Bloom project to cover the Leverburgh and Scalpay areas with  filled planters. HVS continue to run this project through its Harris Environmental Improvements Group (HEI)   which involves volunteers from the local community.
